Pike's Peak Ascent 2009

Yesterday was Hans' big race--the Pike's Peak Ascent! It's a half marathon up Pike's Peak, which is a 14,110 foot mountain. Crazy! Hans ran it two years ago and did it in about 4 hours 15 minutes, so he goal was break 4 hours...and he did! 3 hours, 55 minutes and 57 seconds was his official time...

Here's Reily getting ready to go up to the mountain...what a cool mountain baby!
And Isaac...all bundled up! I was so glad the boys and I got to go to the top this time. When Hans ran the Ascent two years ago, I was 38 weeks pregnant with Reily and my doctor wouldn't let me go up there, since the oxygen level is 60% of what it is at seal level. When Hans ran up Mt. Evans earlier this year, I couldn't go up because Isaac was only a few weeks old and his little lungs wouldn't have been able to handle it. This time we got the okay from the pediatrician and the whole family went up! Luckily I had Hans' dad there to help me keep an eye on the boys...

The view was gorgeous! Nothing like standing on top of the highest mountain around...

Here's a picture of our friend from college, Tim Bishop, finishing the race in 3 hours, 2 minutes and 37 seconds! Woohoo Tim! He rocked it! He and Hans have been running together for years...they did their first marathons together in 2003 in Pittsburgh, and Tim went to Boston with Hans for the Boston Marathon. They've gone to Cleveland and Arizona for other races together, too...so even though Hans said he would never run the Pike's Peak Ascent again, when Tim said he was coming out from Pennsylvania for it, Hans agreed to do it again...

Reily got bored waiting at the top and wanted to climb on all of the rocks. He's a pretty good rock climber, but it scared me since it was hard for me to keep my footing with Isaac strapped to my chest, a backpack, my purse, and an almost-two year old trying to jump down the rocks! Aghh...stressful! Luckily, no one got hurt!

Here's a picture of Hans finishing the race...he's the one in the gray shirt, and he passed the other guy right before the finish line...

Randomly, Hans and Tim ran into their cross country coach from college! She's taking a sabbatical from GCC to do research at the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, and we saw her at the training center and at the top of the mountain! She was proud of her former runners!

We're so proud of Daddy!!

Right after finishing the race...he looks pretty good for doing what he just did!

Maybe Reily will run the Ascent one day...Hans said the only way he'll ever run it again is if one of the boys wants to...so we'll see! :)

Congrats, Hans!!
