Recent Memories

We’ve had a fun weekend of memories and family giggles…

  • Like Hans taking Isaac out of his high-chair and asking where his diaper was and why he had cheerios stuck to his bare bottom!

  • Reily insisting he’s 4 years old and not 3, until we told him that if he is already 4, then we don’t need to have a birthday party for him, and he immediately agrees that he’s only 3….

  • Background:  Isaac’s been spending time with some hooligans from church who are teaching him bad words. They’re really good kids, but still…for a mom of a 2 year old, it’s pretty sad.  He now knows how to say Poo Poo Head, and he knows that he shouldn’t say it and says it anyway!  Reily was a lot older before he started saying anything remotely naughty, and we tried to “hot sauce on the tongue” approach.  We only had to put hot sauce on his tongue once before he learned!  Since then, just the threat of hot sauce on his tongue has been enough to get him to stop, and he’s now getting old enough to be able to talk about what the Bible says and how words can hurt people or encourage people…

Side note, Hans is against the hot sauce idea because he wants the boys to grow up liking hot sauce and not being traumatized and avoiding all spicy foods.  He wanted to do the soap-in-the-mouth punishment until we found out that’s considered child abuse.  Who knew?!  So hot sauce it is…

So yesterday we finally had it with Isaac calling Reily “Poo Poo Head,” and even though I thought he was too young, we decided to try hot sauce.  I warned him, and when he did it again, we got out the hot sauce from the fridge and put some on his tongue.  He cried, and I held him on the couch and it made me so sad…but we’re trying to be good parents and I was hoping it would teach him a good lesson…he got over it, and we went on with our day…

This morning as we’re all sitting around the table at breakfast, Isaac walks over to the fridge, pulls the hot sauce out of the door, and brings it over to us like he wanted some!  Hans and I glanced at each other, and then said, “no no, Isaac.”  So he looks like he’s thinking, and then he smiles and says “Poo Poo Head!” and thrusts the hot sauce at us!  The kid loves hot sauce!?  We laughed so hard…

I guess we’ll be trying to find another tactic to deal with naughty words.  Any ideas??
