Big Baby

Well, I went to the doctor yesterday for my 30 week appointment (I was 30 weeks and 5 days), and the baby is measuring at 35 weeks...I wasn't too concerned because Reily measured big the entire time too, and this baby has been measuring big throughout this pregnancy...just not 4.5 weeks big!

The doctor, on the other hand, was pretty concerned. He also told me at my last appointment two weeks ago that the reason I had such a hard time pushing with Reily was that his shoulders got stuck...so the concern is that if this baby is big, we'd have a very difficult delivery. So...the plan for now is to do an ultrasound at 36-37 weeks and see how big the baby is. If he's still measuring big, we'll schedule a c-section for around 39 weeks. The doc said that's less risky than inducing early and ending up with an emergency c-section...which makes sense, I guess.

Needless to say, I wasn't very happy with that news...I thought the reason I had such a hard time pushing was that I didn't have any medication, was in miserable pain, and didn't know what I was doing...still, I'd much, much rather do it again than have a scheduled c-section. For goodness sakes, I've already done it--my pelvis can't be THAT small, can it?

My hope is that the measurements are off...Reily always measured big, and he was only 7lbs 6oz when he was born...but I guess the concern is if his shoulders got stuck and he was an "average" size baby, they don't think I could push out a baby bigger than 8 lbs. Also, they say it's easier the 2nd time around because your body already knows what to do. But they also say 2nd babies are bigger...So for now we're just praying that the baby isn't as large as he's measuring and that the ultrasound shows that his head is bigger than his abdomen...so hopefully I can go into labor on my own when the baby is ready to come!

I'm so sorry that you might be facing a c-section. Is there a way they can try a vaginal delivery first and then switch if it isn't working out? I know you have family near to help in case you do get the c-section but it sucks to be looking at the possibility of a longer recovery time.

On the positive side you'll know when the baby is coming and all the convenience of the c-section.

I am sure he's going to be the perfect size and all will work out. I totally understand the disappointment of possibly facing a c-section, but they're really not too bad as far as recovery goes...but I am still rooting for as natural delivery as possible. Hopefully this time you can have an epidural!! Here's for hoping!
Keep up the good work, you're in the final stretch!

I hope you are able to delivery on your own. Its funny how the measurments can be so off sometimes. I was measuring small after 32 weeks and they did ultrasounds at 34 and 36 weeks to make sure George was growing. They said he was going to be between 7-8 lbs. Well, at 41 weeks and still looking small, failure to progress and c-section later it turned out he was 9 lbs 9 oz.
