Reily had a rough episode a few weeks ago…poor little guy took a nap, woke up and played trains for awhile, and then began complaining that his leg hurt. I didn’t think much of it, and we went about the rest of the afternoon…
By the evening he was complaining more and more, but his leg looked fine—no swelling, bruising, etc. We had dinner and he started limping, so we figured a hot bath would be good to soak his muscles. After the bath he was still complaining, but we put him to bed and figured he’d be fine in the morning.
A few hours later he woke up screaming in pain…he wouldn’t put any weight on his legs and he was crying terribly. We had about a half-dose of Children’s Tylenol, so I gave that to him and put him in our bed…we still couldn’t see anything wrong with his leg!
After about an hour and a half of restless half-sleep where he whimpered almost the whole time, he again started screaming in pain. I was so freaked out…I didn’t know if he had a blood clot in his leg, if it was broken, or what…it was so much worse than any growing pains. He wouldn’t let us touch it any more, and he sobbed uncontrollably when I picked him up (he wouldn’t move on his own) because he said it hurt so bad! We prayed and seriously considered going into the ER, but since his legs LOOKED completely fine, we couldn’t do it…the last trip was too expensive! ;)
It was about 2:30 in the morning, and I called his pediatrician and ended up making a middle of the night trip to Walmart to buy more Children’s tylenol and ibuprofen. Hans stayed up with Rei and tried to get his mind off the pain by watching a movie…we alternated meds every two hours while he cried…it was heart-breaking!
The next day he still wouldn’t put any weight on it, so we went to the pediatrician’s office, and they sent us for x-rays. I’m so grateful Grandma Ellen was able to come and watch Isaac while I went with Reily…the whole ordeal took a few hours! Here are some pics of the little guy getting his x-ray. They wouldn’t let me in the room and he looked so little in there on his own!
The x-ray showed everything was normal and there wasn’t a break…but he still wouldn’t put any weight on it! However, by the evening he was starting to crawl on the ground and put weight on it that way, by night time he was starting to limp, and the next day he wanted to go to school, even though he had a little limp! By the time he got home from school he was acting completely normal! Bizarre! The doctor called me a few times to check up on him, and he said it was probably a deep bone bruise, but we’ll probably never know…
I’ve never seen Reily in so much pain…I’m just so glad he’s okay! And I truly believe all the prayers that were going up for him led to his complete healing. Praise the Lord that he cares so much about the little guys…

Hi Lisa!
Something similar to this happened to a family that goes to church with us. Their son, Caleb, has major leg pain similar to what your wrote about Reily but he also had some bruising around his knee. They found out it was viral arthritis - meaning when he has a virus, the symptom could be this leg pain. Sometimes he'll have that symptom, other times not. Weird, but that's what I thought of while reading this!
Hope you are feeling well - liked the leaves pictures too :)
