ROAD TRIP!

Can you tell I’ve been trying to catch up on blogging by all of the posts I’ve had?  I have some sort of weird compulsion that I can’t blog about current activities until I’ve caught up with past pictures…which is probably why I’m always behind! :)

Anyway, after numerous requests for updates on our trip…here it goes!

We are currently in San Diego, California for 16 days while Hans takes a class for work.  The boys and I tagged along since we all know I don’t do well being a single mom while he travels…and, well, it’s San Diego.  Free vacation?  Yes please!

Since our last road trip to Albuquerque was, at best, “rough” since the boys cried, whined, screamed, begged for food and candy, and had explosive diapers, etc, for the entire 6 hour (which became 8 hours with stops) drive…lets just say we were a little nervous about making an 18 hour drive with the kiddos…

So this time, we decided to try driving through the night…and it was AWESOME!!  We left about 9 PM, the boys were both asleep within 30 minutes, Hans drove 4.5 hours, and then I took on the next shift, and then we switched off again.  We listed to books on tape (interesting fiction books, not the boring-put-you-to-sleep deep theological ones Hans listens to on his commute), and the boys slept almost the entire time!  FANTASTIC!!  I’m sold on driving through the night with a 1 and 2 year old…

The drive was great and safe, though we did see a car hit a deer right in front of us about 2 miles from our house, and then we saw a couch in the middle of the highway about 10 miles from our house, which we swerved around…after that, it was clear sailing!

(Here’s a picture from the day before we left near our neighborhood in Castle Rock…taken through my driver’s window).

We had breakfast at Cracker Barrel around 7 AM when the kids woke up…they were happy to get out of the car, but not so happy to have to sit still for breakfast! :)

We stopped in Las Vegas the next morning, after about 12 hours of driving…we called some friends of Hans’ parents who we’ve known forever and who happen to live there, and were blessed to be able to visit with them first thing in the morning!  We were feeling good and weren’t tired, so we visited for awhile and then they treated us to In-N-Out! Yummy!

We eventually made it to our hotel, an awesome new hotel off the Strip that we were able to get for less than $40 since it was a Sunday night…including 2 free breakfast buffets that put all other hotel breakfasts to shame!  (You know how we love a deal!)

The pool at the hotel was awesome and the boys had a blast…

We also visited the Las Vegas Strip…though I have to say, I didn’t like Vegas very much…or, at all.  I’ve been there a few times before, but this time it was even worse…maybe it was the stifling 100+ temperatures, the overpriced kids activities, or the glares we got from the gross old people with “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” shirts…but I was very grateful we were just passing through and our boys were too young to understand all of the things around us and ask questions!

The “highlight” of our visit to the strip was seeing the dolphins and white tigers at the Mirage…the boys loved it!

Look at how red poor Isaac’s cheeks were!  It was so hot, we were all miserable.   Thank goodness everything inside is air conditioned…though you had to put up with the smoky casino!

The tigers were very close, which was really cool…we’ve never seen tigers that close, and the boys were thrilled…

The next day we packed up the car and headed for San Diego…with a stop at a McDonalds play area for a break!  Do you see Hans and Isaac up there?
